About Dimahne

My name is Shui Kwan Wong, but my friends call me Abby. I am the creator of this website, Dimahne. My goal of setting up this website is to create a virtual gathering place for people who love fine art.

I have loved fine art ever since I was in elementary school. I especially like oil paintings for I love the thick brush marks one can leave on a canvas. Back then, I knew I had to learn oil painting some day.

A few years ago, I started my first job after graduate school and I suddenly had more free time than when I was in school. So I decided to learn oil painting. After taking a few different oil painting courses, I found a very good instructor , Joel Babb. It has been almost three years since I took the first oil painting class with Joel. In Joel's class, I have not only developed better painting skills but also made a few good friends. And Ernie Stonebraker is one of them.

During winter and summer breaks, the three of us (Joel, Ernie and I ) would email each other electronic copies of the new paintings we did during the breaks. Eventaully, the idea of setting up a website to display our paintings hit me. Then one idea led to another, I want my website to do more than just displaying our own paintings. I would like to open my website to other artists as well. Artists from all over the world are encouraged to submit their works to Dimahne's Online Gallery. I love diversity and I firmly believe that we can learn a great deal from other cultures. With Dimahne's Message Board, artists will find it easy to share their thoughts, ideas, painting or drawing techniques with other. They can also critique other people's art works on the message board. I would also like to open my website to non-artists. The general public can come to Dimahne's Online Gallery to see original art works from artists of our time. They can also participate in art discussions on Dimahne's Message Board. Even non-artists can sometimes give very insightful comments on art-related subjects. By having the Gallery List, I hope I can give people some ideas on what to do on the weekends. I also include an Online Art Store on my website, so people can shop for art-related merchandise online.

In one simple sentence, I want to promote fine art using my website. I know my ambition is big and I will not be able to achieve this goal merely by myself. That is why I call my website, Dimahne (dim-ah-ne). Dimahne is a word from a not too common Chinese dialect, and it means teeny-tiny. My website represents a teeny-tiny effort that I am trying to contribute to the art community. My website is still in its infancy, and it needs other art lovers' help to shape it and make it grow. -- abby (August, 2000)

PS. My website will be updated at least once a week. So come back often to see the new stuff.
